Pencil Figure Drawing and Composition

Course Overview:

Learn the art of composing a page of figures using just two mechanical pencils, a kneaded eraser, a blending stump, and a small sanding block. (If you prefer to work in other, color media, that is fine with me too, as the principles of construction are the same.) In this course, you will learn how to start a drawing, how to crosshatch and blend, how to use an eraser as a drawing tool, how to use sight-size drawing and foreshortening techniques, how to construct and render heads, torso, hands, and feet, how to create volume with form and cast shadows, how to properly apply accents, and how to infuse your compositions with the elements and principles of design. We will sit or stand around a well-lit life model in one new pose each week. The pencil basics you learn in this class will form a foundation for future courses, including Prismacolor, watercolor, gouache, and pastel. All levels are welcome, as instruction is given on an individual basis.

Materials:

Two mechanical pencils, a 2 mm mechanical holder with 4B leads and a 0.5 mechanical pencil with 2B leads; kneaded eraser; blending stump; small sanding block; rag; drawing pad, 18˝ x 24˝, Strathmore series 300 (or any brand you already have); foam core drawing support, 20˝ x 30˝ x 3/16˝ thick, with two bulldog clips.

Attention: Artists & Craftsman Supply (Hillcrest) will have two discounted kits for students. These supplies are hand-selected by me and are a great deal for you. Buy both, combined, or either one separately if you already have the materials provided in the other kit.

Kit #1: drawing board, clips, drawing pad. Kit #2: recommended pencils, eraser, stump, sanding block.
